Baby Carriers for Baby Support

Wearing one’s baby is a common practice in many cultures. The earliest pram was developed as early as 1733. On the body baby carrying is a practice as old as 1960s. Pediatricians hold that wearing one’s little one develops a strong bond between the mother or father and the baby.

There are basically five types of Baby Carriers :

1. Sling / Pouch Style - A kind of baby carrier wherein the baby weight is supported with one shoulder. It’s a hit with mothers who want some privacy as the carriers allow public breast feeding. It is recommended that slings carriers maintain 20 pounds weight limit only.
2. Mei Tai / Asian Baby Carrier (ABC) - This Chinese form of baby carriers have been around for hundred of years. The style however, became common in the west near about 2003. It’s a four strap carrier with two around the waist and two on the shoulders. Mei tai is a front carrier but it can be converted into a backpack carrier style as well. Such a carrier is not suggested for newborns.
3. Back Pack or Front Pack Carriers - Fathers, especially love this style of baby wearing. These are not only comfortable but also trendy.
4. Baby Wrap - A comfortable two shoulder carrier that almost gives the mother child duo a cocoon feeling.

Things to be borne in mind while selecting a Baby Carrier :

1. Age and weight of the baby is really important.
2. Since baby carriers are designed for babies, their fabric would be light weight and soft, but one needs to assure by feeling it.
3. Avoid those with unnecessary straps, buttons, buckles etc.
4. The carrier should be versatile that is to say that they should assist the child through various stages of development.

All in all baby carriers are for those mommies who want to complete their daily chores without parting with their babies. It is recommend that newborns be worn facing the mother so that he/she can smell the parent, listen to the parent’s heart beat and feel the parent. A little grown up may be wrapped facing the outer world.
